It's July 3 today, and tomorow is America's 250th birthday. This should be something awesome for the country as a whole to celebrate, but we have a turd of a Cheeto as a president right now who has politicized everything and created a pall over an event that should be bringing the country together.
Don't get me wrong, I love America, and part of that love is combined with the fact that I know that America has been, and can again be, better than it is today. I also recognize that no matter how great some things are in America (our many parks, public lands, etc.), there are definitely areas for improvement (universal health care, better wages, etc.). It is through that lens that I consider a song like this, a song that is critical of the "Americanization" of global culture.
America can be great, but there are other viewpoints, other cultures and ways of doing things that may not be better than the American way, but certainly as worthy. This song, taken from an outsider looking in, one can see that there's much to admire about the United States, but there are valid concerns as well.
Again, I love America, there are times I am proud to be an American, but I also believe in humility.
As we all celebrate this historic birthday, it's good to consider how we got to where we are today.
Be humble.
I hope you have a lovely Fourth of July! Enjoy and be safe!
Updated (04.24.26): since NIN/Boys Noize have since released Nine Inch Noize I have updated this post with the official version of the track below. At 30+ years old I think we can all agree that "Closer" was a hit that was about as perfect as it could have been, and has since become a classic. But ever since I saw NIN in Detroit, and even before, thanks to YouTube, I have been obsessed with this remix of the track. I thought maybe that would fade, but here we are weeks later and I am still impressed with not only the audacity to rework such a well-known, iconic song, but I'm equally astounding as to how well it works. And now, with the Coachella lineup announced (see above as well), it's obvious that this NIN/Boys Noize collaboration is going to continue as Nine Inch Noize. Personally, I love it, and am hopeful to get an official release of this version so I can buy it and listen to it to my heart's content. Welcome to Monday! Enjoy!
