Suuns "2020"

Suuns "2020"

I fucking love this song, and no, it's not new. I believe it's about 10yrs. old at this point, so maybe you're wondering why I'm posting it.

A little something about me: I have 900+ CDs (in storage), ~150 vinyl LPs, and terabytes of mp3s. I like music, I like music a lot.

With such a vast collection I have lots and lots of individual songs. I'll like a song and listen to it obsessively for a while, but eventually move on to another set of tracks.

Every so often I'll dig up a song from the past and rediscover how awesome it is.

This week that's Suuns "2020."

So what's to love? Part of it is the wailing guitar combined with that pulsing bassline, but I think the best way to describe this track (and many of the tracks I post here) is that it contains a sort of aural umami. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I find this song to be terribly catchy despite it not being a typical pop song.

To be fair, I couldn't tell you anything about any other music that Suuns have put out, but for me this is perfection.

Bonus: tomorrow is Canada Day (and I might just happen to be in Canada this week) and Suuns is a Canadian band. This wasn't planned, but I appreciate serendipity when it happens. You'll notice a theme this week because of this track. Happy Canada Day tomorrow for those that celebrate!

Enjoy!

Nine Inch Nails "Closer" (B Stage Remix w/Boys Noize)

At 30+ years old I think we can all agree that "Closer" was a hit that was about as perfect as it could have been, and has since become a classic.  But ever since I saw NIN in Detroit, and even before, thanks to YouTube, I have been obsessed with this remix of the track. I thought maybe that would fade, but here we are weeks later and I am still impressed with not only the audacity to rework such a well-known, iconic song, but I'm equally astounding as to how well it works. And now, with the Coachella lineup announced  (see above as well), it's obvious that this NIN/Boys Noize collaboration is going to continue as Nine Inch Noize. Personally, I love it, and am hopeful to get an official release of this version so I can buy it and listen to it to my heart's content. Welcome to Monday! Enjoy!

Elbow "Sober"

Look, I realize that I just posted a song by Elbow on Friday , and to be clear, this isn't an Elbow fanatic blog now. That said, I was anticipating hearing  "My Sad Captains" over the weekend, but Elbow changed their setlist and, sadly, I did not get to hear it peformed live. It is what it is, the show was still amazing! I fully admit that I had only taken a cursory listen to their new album Audio Vertigo before the show, but "Sober" was definitely a live standout. I've listened to this song multiple times since hearing it live on Sunday night and am currently obsessed. So yeah, you got some Elbow on Friday, and now you get some more today because this song is now an earworm for me. It's so damn good! (FYI: this song is technically from the Audio Vertigo: Echo EP, but it is now included on the deluxe version of Audio Vertigo, as are the other EP tracks.) Enjoy!

California Gold "Stand Close"

Yeah, I know that today is Friday the 13th and that maybe I should be posting something scary, but it's also the day before Valentine's Day, so I have chosen to be sappy. Deal with it. Couples often have "their song" and while Shalee and I are not immune to that, what constitutes "our" song seems to change every few years. I think it's safe to say that currently this is our song. I hope someone loves you like you deserve. You deserve it. Happy Valentine's Day (tomorrow)!
